Lost in Wilderness at Tadoba Tiger Reserve

Tigers at Tadoba Reserve in Nagpur How many are actually aware that Maharashtra has one of the marvellous and lesser known tiger reserve – Tadoba, which is three hours away from Nagpur.

Having always seen a tiger caged in a zoo, I was really keen on catching a glimpse of this elusive beast in his natural surrounding. Was I lucky? Lets find out…

I landed in Nagpur - the city of oranges for an office assignment (had to write a hotel review, which was fun too), I completed my work within two days, so I can leave as soon as possible for Tadoba, which is three hours away from Nagpur airport.

I was accompanied by the owner of Tiger Trails, a colonial style forest lodge where I was going to stay. And the interesting part was the lodge is situated in a small thick-forested valley, right in the center of the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger reserve.

So at night you find animals crossing the fenced area or maybe drinking water from one the waterholes close by.

Fascinating Facts

The reserve holds around 50 Bengal tigers. Along with tigers other frequently spotted wildlife are Leopards, Sloth Bears, Gaur,Wild Dogs, Indian Mugger, Sambar, and many species of Indian deer. The best part is Tadoba reserve is open throughout the year, while the others – Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Ranthambore - remains closed during the monsoon. So isn’t it a good bet to come here instead.

The way to Tadoba is a picturesque drive through the sunflower fields, which are spread on both sides.
Me and the sunflower fieldsOn reaching the place late in the evening, one can feel the silence hanging around the place; birds chirping and animals calling, it close to wilderness!!! That’s what I like, close to god’s creation and time and space come to an absolute halt. We made a bonfire and the owner offered me Mahua (a drink made out of Mahua flower) The flower from Mahua trees are fermented and brewed. It also has nutritional values, as the villagers use it to get proteins. Flower PowerA pure potent drink surely got me buzzing, and to top it the owner started to tell me really interesting, a bit scary stories. He told me about an incident where the tigress once entered the courtyard in search of water, sloth bears high on Mahua giggling and laughing, sounded like human beings, jackals tapping on the glass window once.

Well, these incidents certainly sent a chill down my spine as the animal calls intensified. A night in the jungle can be a totally different experience, as darkness engulfs you in no time. It’s an eerie feeling, like someone is watching you from those dense bushes, waiting to pounce. That night, though I had to be up by 5 am, I couldn't sleep, out of nervousness, excitement and anticipation. The journey was about to begin.

Jungle safari at Tadoba:

The park opens at 6 am as we took off in an open jeep, belonging to Tiger Trails, in search of a tiger. I was hoping I get lucky the first time. First in sight were sambars, chitals, peacocks, peahens, barking deer, who criss-crossed our paths several times during the safari.

Water buffaloesTiger Trials gets access to almost all areas of the reserve, so unlike other tiger reserves where one can only move around in certain areas, at Tadoba, you can make your own path. Spread over 623 sq.km of high hills and lush valleys, the reserve is under dense teak and bamboo forests, and through it flows the Tadoba and Andhari rivers.

There are 11 large lakes here. We were also accompanied by the forest guide, though there were of little use. In a jungle safari one needs to follow the alarm calls, which are made by various birds and animals when they spot the mighty creature.
Wildlife in TadobaThat’s what we did, went from one water hole to another following the calls, waited for several minutes at one spot, but no luck. Closest I came was when the tiger was hiding behind a dense bush, his head easily camouflaged, which makes it difficult to spot (but that’s what the Tiger Trails’ owner told me). As soon as he sensed the presence of human beings he moved away.

After five hours of wandering around we gave up. The park closes at 10 am and opens again in the afternoon at 3 pm till 6 pm.

With disappointment written all over my face, I reached the lodge and was a tad unhappy with the outcome. But I truly cherished this adventurous and enthralling time I had at this place.

Been to Tadoba in last week of Feb 08. It is heard that teh Maharashtra Govt. would be closing down the hostel and inforest accommodations. Thats sad. Moreover, foreign NGOs are sen trying to establish thier hotels in gard of social services. More sad as the forest reserve might get more expensive for common man. The same way lawn tennis has become a domain of a few neo-rich people. With experts like Atul Dhamankar and Pramod who are thouroughly utilising their passions for the wildlife, both of whom are residents of Chandrapur, I hope the rest of Maharashtra and other lovers of this forest and its flora & fauna unites in some or the other way to save this bastion to maintain it within the economic reach of all people.

The Temptress said... @ 6:18 PM

Hi Sachin, the forest accomodation is actually a nice interesting place, within the confines of the jungle, and next to the water body made it an amazing location to spot tigers, across the lake. If its true that the government is shutting down the lodges, then its quite sad. As other guest houses like Tiger Trails, are quite expensive to stay in. I hope Tadoba doesn't become a commercialised center, it would just spoil the sanctity if the place. Besides, tigers are also disappearing slowly, so its a grim situation all round.

Btw did you spot a tiger there?

Dear Sachin / Bhavika,
We (self, spouse, 2 kids) are planning to visit Tadoba in mid-April. Are there any hotels in Tadoba which could be recommended other then Tiger Trails? For Bhavika's article, I note that the reserve is open only between 6am to 10am and 3pm to 6pm. Do we have to sit inside the lodge for rest of the time ? (since it may be foolhardy to go around with kids without escort). Is staying over in Nagpur for a day worth the while? Any good hotel you can recommend? We are from Mumbai. Thanks, Rajesh.

The Temptress said... @ 9:06 PM

Hey Rajesh

MTDC provides self-contained rooms at Tadoba, you can contact them at their office in Mantralaya. You would have to stay in Tadoba if you really want to catch a glimpse of the tiger, coz if you are really lucky, you might get to see one on your first visit.

There isn't much to do in Nagpur, Tadoba is the main attraction. have a good trip and let me know if I can be of any further help!

rv said... @ 2:45 PM

Thanks, Bhavika. Hope I can trouble you with one more question. Can we go for the MTDC lodge instead of Tiger Trails. Is the MTDC lodge reasonably comfortable? And more importantly, will it be senior citizen friendly (english style toilets etc)? Tiger Trails is expensive (like staying in London)considering I will have 5 members from my family, including 2 kids and they charge per head. Also, whether MTDC offers jeep rides into the reserve like Tiger Trail offers? Will really appreciate your input. We are planning to visit between April 10 to April 13th. Kind regards, Rajesh

The Temptress said... @ 4:24 PM

MTDC lodge is outside the main gate of the reserve. It offers clean rooms near Irai Lake. The cost is definitely more reasonable than Tiget Trails...it should cost you approx Rs 650 to Rs 850. I am not sure of the Engligh style toilets, you can contact them at
022-22026713. When I went only Tiger Trails were allowed to take their jeeps to unrestricted areas in the park...so they could take their jeeps anywhere in the park, MTDC should have their own jeeps, but I doubt they would have permission to take it everywhere.

Hope this helps:)

rv said... @ 5:12 PM

Certainly helps!! Thanks. I will keep you posted after we return on April 13th. Kind regards, Rajesh

The Temptress said... @ 5:19 PM

You're most welcome...hoping to hear from you more on the place when you return.

Hi..! My name is Shalik Jogwe. I am from Chandrapur and a Wildlifer working for the conservation of tigers. Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Project is the area of my interest and I am the regular visitor there. If anybody needs help, I am ready to help them.
From April 1, 2008 No tourist can stay in the heart of Tadoba tiger reserve. All the tourist shall have to come back at any of the entry gate. All the accomodation facilities have now shifted outside the TATR.
YOU CAN NOT ENTER INTO THE TATR AFTER 9:30 AM AND 4:30 PM.
If anybody wish to know anymore, you can contact me on 9420303020 or mail me at tadobatiger@gmail.com

Good to know that you are working for the conservation of this mighty animal. Would there be any way we can help, do let us know.

Thanks, Shalik for this input. My name is Rajesh Varma. I am travelling to Tadoba on 10Apr with wife/2 kids/ and two cousins, both senior citizens. We will be delighted to invite you for lunch / dinner, if you happen to be in Tadoba around this time (10Apr-12Apr). I have noted your no. We are booked at the MTDC. Mr. Rajesh Varma,
due to my search for Tigers in Regular forest area, Yesterway (on 10th) I was in Lohara Jungle area. I am just now coming back from Moharli. But unfortunately I am reading you now else we would have been definitely meet. I will be glad to meet you. If possible, I may come to Moharli tomorrow morning. Atleast you should have to try me Yesterday. Today, at Vasant Bandhara, a very good sighting happened for around 10 Min. The Guide was Sanjay Mondhe.

Thanks Bhavika,
I am very glad to know that you would like to help in my conservation efforts. Whenever I feel such any need I will definitely ask for the same. But one thing that I want to know from you is in what way you would like to help. If you provide me this information, it will be very much useful for me while asking for help.
You can directly reply me at tadobatiger@gmail.com
Thanks once again.

Hi...!
In my conservation efforts, I feel the ground forest-staff is very important. The forest department itself arranges medical-camps for their staff-n-locals. In their effort, I am consistently helping them in every manner as much as I can.
In the same effort, the department has arranged a forest camp at Tadoba, I am helping them alongwith Dr. (Mr. & Mrs.) Deotale. I hope this camp will also succeed like previous one which we collectively organised at Mohurli.
I am also very glad by receiving the helping hand from Mr. Rajesh Varma whom I met at M.T.D.C. Resort, Moharli.
I holpe this blog itself will prove to be a milestone in the conservation efforts.
In the next few months, I am looking for a special medical-camp for local people as per the requirement local requirement. If anybody wish to help me in this regard they can contact me here or on 9420303020 or mail me at tadobatiger@gmail.com.
Looking for your suggestions. They will be most welcome.

Hi Shalik,
This is Basavraj Jetagi .We 5 friends are coming to tadoba on 1st of may.we will be staying there upto 4th may.We all are 1st time visitors .I called up MTDC they said u come there and book rooms. We will be glad if u can help us exporing tadoba. We are really looking forword to this visit.
As u said nobody can stay in heart of tadoba from 1st April. Will staying @ MTDC is better option or there is any other options which would be better than MTDC ? except TIGER TRAIL as it is so costly..

rv said... @ 10:23 AM

Hi! Shalik. It was great meeting you in MTDC, Tadoba. Basavraj, I highly recommend Shalik as your guide and mentor for Tadoba. You will have a totally different experience, I assure you. The local guides don't have much knowledge, you need someone by Shalik to show you around. Please contact him.

A few comments on my trip there: No, did not see the Tiger, just missed it. There was a sighting on 9th Apr evening. But we saw the elusive leopard, wild dogs, crocodile, sloth bear and rest of the teaming game (spotted deer, Nilgai, Sambhar, Bison etc). Great forest, totally uncommercialised. Tourists are mainly from Chandrapur/Nagpur/Hyderabad.
Weekends are crowded, but weekdays...you have the forest for yourself. The rumours of MTDC shutting down are not true. They have installed a/cs in all rooms, but waiting for a transformer of higher capacity. The resort manager has an appropriate name Mr. Ranjitsingh Sher!! Tadoba in highly recommended....but go with an experienced hand like Shalik to enhance the experience. Cheers.

rv said... @ 10:28 AM

One more comment for Basavraj...there are only 3 options to stay in Tadoba ...the MTDC...Hotel Saras (just opened with 4 rooms) and Tiger Trails. Given cost / experience etc, I recommend MTDC. It overlooks the lake and if you are lucky, will see wildlife from the resort itself. Please speak to the resort manager, Mr. Sher for room availability etc. His no. is 09921027275. Happy Sighting!!

Hon. Mr. Basavraj,
I am very glad to know that U,alongwith your frnds, are coming to Tadoba.
You said, you all are first time visitors. But I promise you, while leaving the place, you will not have such feeling.
Whether MTDC or Saras, is not the matter in my opinion. What is the matter is that from where, when and how you are entering the reserve. In this regard, Mohurli is the best place.
If it is possible to you, reach chandrapur/Mohurli at any Tuesday evening. TATR is closed on every Tuesday. This Tuesday-silence will benefit you in Wednesday morning early entry.
It is possible that I may be with you full time during your stay, with my Open 4WD Military-Green coloured Gypsy.
Even if I can't manage myself, I will provide you the proper person.
Don't worry...! Just start Packing...!
Leave the rest for me.....!

As per our conversation today afternoon, you are planning to come tadoba in the next week.
But my advice is that rather than coming in the next week, you just plan to come in first or second week of may or even after that is definitely very good.
Contact me.

Dear Friends,
In continuous efforts towards the Wild-Life conservation, as I said in my previous post, the Medical Check-Up and Medicine distribution camp has been held at Tadoba. Around 85 TATR-staff and surrounding villagers benefitted from this camp.
Dr. Deotale (Duo) rendered their valuable services.
Mr. Channe (RFO), Tadoba Range, and staf, made all the arrangements properly to benefit the camp at maximum extent.

Tiger's Meeting at Kaatezari area seen.
In Kolsa Range at Shivanzari, Three cubs are sighted.
This Cub sighting is very good for conservationists. This shows the growing numbers and removes some pressure from declining numbers of Big cat.
Hope this trail will keep continued in future as well.

Hi...! On 2nd May, in evening session We have a great sighting at Pandharpauni. I was there with BASAVRAJ AND HIS FRIENDS. We have sighted the same male tiger at various 4 locations. It was really a very good sighting.
You can see the edited photo at www.tadoba-tiger.blogspot.com
If anybody wishto know more, contact me.

Dear Yash/Arunav/Sravanth,
You have sighted 3 cubs at Kolsa range is a very good news. Please see my post of 25th April. I have clearly mentioned there in. By the way, You are very lucky. Usually Tigress takes complete care while leaving the cubs alone. So this is not a general sighting. I was confidant, you will get them there that's reason why I was insisting to move to Kolsa in morning session from inside the park area.
By the way till, till now I made it possible for everybody. Basavraj has also sighted same tiger at various 4 locations.
Do Come again...!
But before planning let me know your dates. Leave the rest for me...!
Proper planning for exploring any wild life is very essential.
Bye....! Have cheers..!

A great Rocking Session at Tadoba with Ragh Venkatraman and Jayesh Morvankar From Mumbail from May,7 to May, 10th.
On May 7th, In the morning Raghu wished for wildlife and I set to go for Tiger, at 6:31 AM we sighted a tigeress at Aswalhira for around 30 Min. and at 10:00 AM at Pandharpauni a tiger started prawling just in front of us.
In the evening we dont entered the park, instead we had taken birding at a nearby lake.

On May 8th, We decided to go for Wild Dogs, Very difficult to sight, but we were so lucky that at Water hole No. 1, as soon as we entered the park in the morning session, We sighted a complete group of Wild-Dogs for around 20 Min.
In the Evening session, I managed to stay at Kolsa Rest house, we set to go for Kolsa. In this evening session we target Sloth Bear and what a miracle! We just got it crossing after Rantalodhi at a very close distance in front of us on the road. Now our next target was Leopards.

So early in the morning of May 9th, We set ourselves to have a sight of Leopard as well 3 cubs along with tigress, and what a great luck this time as well we got a pair of Leopards engaged in meeting..! and a Sloth bear with its cute cub...! alongwith remarkable variety of birds.
In the evening session, I was not with Raghu-n-Jayesh, But provide them a proper hand, and they had the sighting of Wild dogs once again alongwith No. of birds. Besides this in the every session we have a lot of time, after our targeted sighting, to watch birds and so much other wildlife.

On May 10th, Jayesh and Raghu left for Mumbai. On the Way we have a close sight of Juvenile Sloth Bear and good variety of birds. I accompanied them till my native village.
Overall I just can say- Raghu and Jayesh are immensely lucky fellows. They even got so fantastic variety of birds in the park that Jayesh told me that Tadoba park is very good for birding too. The sighting we have in this whole the period, was beyond the knowledge, experience and luck as well. Congrats Raghu-n-Jayesh...! Have Cheers..!
Tadoba has a lot more season for sighting...! Do come...! Call back me at 9420303020.

Thanks for all your updates! I guess the season has ended with the rain, isn't it?

Shalik Jogwe said... @ 1:09 AM

Dear Friends,
Tadoba is still open for ecotourism. This is the only Tiger Reserve which is open in Monsoon. You can explore Tadoba in its natural glory right now in the monsoon. The animal sighting also is very fantastic even in these days. Chandrapur district has not that much rain till now. So you can take the chance. I promise, If you got a sight of the beast, it will be a totally different experience from any other season. Just come and watch it. Leave the tension of arrangements with me. Feel free to call me at 09420303020 or 09372069911.
Tadoba Tiger is really fantastically roaring once again.

Shalik Jogwe said... @ 6:50 PM

Dear Friends,
Tadoba is once again in its great mood. A Tigress with 3 Cubs of around 3 months old and another with 2 Cubs spotted in Tadoba Range.
Mohurli Range has already a Tigress with 3 Cubs.
The Buffer area around Mohruli Range has a Tigress with 4 Cubs. And protected core area has a tigress with 3 Cubs on Dewada-Kolsa Road.
So, at present, as far as it is concerned with Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, we have definitely more than 17 cubs. This is a great news on the background of the declining Tiger population.
This also shows one more thing that Tadoba is proving to be a heaven for TIGERS.
If you are planning to explore Tadoba, Feel free to call me at 09420303020 or 09372069911, It will be a great pleasure for me to help you.

I once again repeat - Tadoba Tiger is in the Roaring Mood......!

Just check the site www.savetadoba.org. The Lohara jungle will be a history soon as Maharashtra Govt. is giving permission for Coal mining project in this jungle. Look this link too, the forest minister says about this tadoba jungle.
http://news.hitavadaonline.com/news/index.php?mode=single&page=13&n=24245

SLJ said... @ 2:38 AM

What Shrushti said is absolutely correct. Lohara jungle will be a history definitely if we all nature and wildlife lovers will not act severly well in time. Basically Lohara jungle is a principle corridor for the wildife of Tadoba Tiger Reserve. If this project came into reality this all the terriotorial surrounding vanished within no time. At present, Lohara jungle has a Tigress with 4 cubs and complete wildlife chain. This is the only side left around Chandrapur city where there is no coalmines. I am basically not opposing the Coal Mine but if the Government want to give permission to mine then its ok but it must be a Underground mine or with any other mine with some latest technology to explore the coal like gasiphication technology. But its the matter of great pity that government is going to give the permisson to Adani group for opencast mine. I APPEAL VERY STRONGLY TO ALL THE NATURE LOVERS TO HELP ME STOP GOVERNMENT AND ADANI GROUP TO HAVE A OPEN COALFIELD IN SUCH A GREAT JUNGLE WHICH HAS A DENSITY OF MORE THAN 80% AND GREATLY RICH IN WILDLIFE.
I JUST CAME BACK ONCE AGAIN TO GET THE PROOFS FROM THIS AREA ABOUT THE RICHNESS OF WILDLIFE HABITAT.
I APPEAL ONCE AGAIN : STOP DEFORESTATION; SAVE WILDLIFE; SAVE ENVIRONMENT.

SLJ said... @ 2:41 AM

Dear Friends,
Tadoba is definitely proving to be a one of the best breeding center for Tigers. On the other side, Government is not paying proper attention towards the development of Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve. Instead they are allowing the destructors to spoil the rich camoflouge of Tadoba National Park under the label "Development" by sanctioning the lease to the opencast coal mines in buffer areas adjacent to TATR.

To witness this rich forest, enriched with the rich variety of flora and fauna, before the destrcution, I appeal you to come atleast once and visit this beautiful park.
